Nanjing University, China: Why Nanjing?

China represents a vast territory with a population in excess of 1.3 billion and boasts more than 5,000 years of uninterrupted civilization.

Nanjing, founded in 900 BC, is the former capital of China (Nanjing literally means "the capital of the south"), during several periods including the Ming dynasty, the Taiping Rebellion and the Nationalist period. It is the capital of Jiangsu Province and boasts a population of around 7.5 million. Lying to the south of the Yangtze River and to the east of Purple Mountain, alongside many historic sites, it provides all the facilities of a bustling provincial capital.
