Richmond, The American International University in London, England: Cultural Activities

The courses at Richmond will be academically rewarding and give you an excellent introduction to College life. However, the learning will not stop when you leave the classroom. London and its environs are rich with history and AIFS has designed a program of included cultural activities to enhance your educational experience. Journey back in time to Henry VIII’s lavish lifestyle at Hampton Court, visit the “Dreaming Spires” of Oxford and discover Britain’s regency heritage in the seaside resort town of Brighton.

Welcome Reception in London

Get to know your fellow students and plan for the summer ahead at a welcome reception hosted by staff from AIFS and Richmond, The American International University in London.

Guided Sightseeing Tour of London

A local guide introduces to you the sights and sounds of London. See Trafalgar Square, built to celebrate the defeat of the French at the Battle of Trafalgar, and Christopher Wren’s St. Paul’s Cathedral. Known for it’s great dome and crypt, this cathedral has played host to some of the most important events in British history—from the funeral of Lord Nelson to the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Continue to Buckingham Palace to see the Changing of the Guard, if available.

Day visit to Brighton

People have been going to Brighton to enjoy the sea air for centuries since the town was made popular in the nineteenth century by the infamous Prince Regent, later to become King George IV, whose glamorous residence The Brighton Pavilion still dominates the Old Stein area. Brighton is deservedly Britain’s number one beachside town – a fascinating mix of seaside and sophistication. Visit the beach and then stroll through the Lanes, a maze of narrow alleyways crammed with antique, jewelry and fashionable clothes shops. There is so much do to and all in the fabulous setting of a traditional British seaside resort.

Day visit to Hampton Court

Take a boat on the legendary River Thames to Hampton Court, Henry VIII’s favorite country home. Inside the palace, visit the Tudor kitchens and the haunted gallery. Outside, wander through the extensive grounds, take in the splendor of the massive gardens and try not to get lost in the maze!

Weekend trip to Oxford, Alton Towers and Warwick Castle

Depart in the morning for Oxford where you will visit Christchurch College and then have free time for shopping and sightseeing. Group meal in the evening and overnight in Oxford. On Saturday travel to Warwick Castle, possibly England’s finest medieval monument. Continue on to Alton for overnight. On Sunday you will spend the whole day at Alton Towers, the U.K.’s greatest theme park with 500 acres of rides and attractions before returning back to London in the evening.

West End Theater Evening

Enjoy a night of theater in London’s famous West End, the undisputed theater capital of the world! Get tickets to one of the most renowned productions in the city and receive transportation to and from the theater.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre

All the world may be a stage, but to get the real authentic feel of Shakespeare’s theater it is essential to visit London’s reconstructed Globe. Experience the perspective of the groundlings, and even try your hand at heckling!

Changing of the Guard

Witness royal pageantry at its finest with a trip to see the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Household Troops have guarded the sovereign since 1660 and you can watch this centuries old tradition as the New Guard replaces the Old Guard, accompanied by the Guards brass band.

London Eye

Originally conceived by architects David Marks and Julia Barfield as an entry for a Millennium Landmark competition, the London Eye took six years and the expertise of hundreds of people from five European countries to turn it into a reality. From the top, you can see for miles and enjoy marvelous views of St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster, and even Windsor Castle!

Jack the Ripper Walk

Imagine an autumn full of gaslight and fog, menacing shadows and stealthy footsteps as you take a guided walk through the part of London where the infamous criminal Jack the Ripper murdered his victims. Along the way, learn about the various theories on the identity of the Ripper.

A Boat Ride on the River Thames

The Thames has always been the heart of London and there is no better way of seeing the capital than from a boat on the river. So many of the main sights are situated along the banks such as the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, the Globe Theater and much more making it an ideal photo opportunity.

London Dungeon

Come and explore the deep, dark depths of old London Town. The London Dungeon looks at the darker side of the history of London. This trip is great fun and only gets scary if you let your imagination run wild.

Soccer Event

Take part in one of Britain’s great pastimes! Play a friendly game of soccer—or football as the British call it—with your new friends. Teams will play a fivea- side tournament in Richmond Park.

Camden Market

Discover one of London’s best markets: vibrant Camden market, famous for its clothes, food, music and artwork. After a brief tour of the market there will be free time to explore and shop on your own.

Late Night Opening at Tate Modern

Opened in 2000, the Tate Modern houses contemporary modern art from artists such as Picasso and Warhol. Start the evening with a brief tour with your Resident Advisor and then explore the gallery on your own.

Optional Excursion Optional weekend excursion to Paris ($525)

Experience the Channel Tunnel on an early evening Eurostar train to Paris. Overnight in Paris. Morning sightseeing tour with a professional guide, visiting the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame. Entrance to the Louvre is included. The next day, students have a free morning in Paris before boarding the Eurostar train back to London late afternoon.

Fees for this excursion include accommodations, transportation, accommodations, breakfast, sightseeing and entrances as indicated. Students must enroll and pay for this excursion by April 30. Students who apply after the deadline may enroll subject to availability. If a minimum enrollment of 15 is not achieved, the trip may be cancelled. Once paid for in the U.S. optional excursions are non-refundable. Dates and itineraries are subject to change.
